CHECKUPS & CLEANINGS

THE POWER OF ROUTINE CHECKUPS & CLEANINGS

During a dental checkup and cleaning (which you should attend at least twice a year), one of our skilled hygienists will thoroughly clean away the bacteria-rich plaque and tartar that builds up on and between your teeth. Also, Dr. Keller will perform a thorough examination, utilizing digital X-rays and intraoral cameras when necessary, to detect signs that you may need a deeper cleaning, or an appropriate restorative procedure.

More Than Just Clean Teeth

Besides making your teeth feel grimy and, in time, becoming noticeable, plaque deposits also contain bacteria that are harmful to your teeth and gum tissues. Brushing and flossing helps control plaque, but its more stubborn form, tartar, cannot be removed with toothpaste and water. Professionally cleaning the biofilms not only cleans your teeth, but helps prevent common dental health issues like chronic bad breath, cavities, and gingivitis (the first stage of gum disease).

Deep (Periodontal) Cleanings

If an examination reveals the presence of gingivitis, which develops when plaque and bacteria work their underneath your gums, then Dr. Keller may recommend a periodontal cleaning. Also known as scaling and root planing, the preventive treatment describes carefully cleaning the bacteria from the teeth roots underneath your gums, allowing the tissues to heal. Because it is more complex than a regular dental cleaning, scaling and root planing may require more than one visit to complete.
