WHAT IS BRUXISM/TMJ TREATMENT?
Cavities and gingivitis are not the only things that can affect your dental health. Bruxism, or the unconscious tendency to grind your teeth, can lead to severe dental damage, and you may not always be aware of the condition. TMJ disorder, which describes a dysfunction in your jaw’s joints, can also cause severe discomfort, and is often closely related to the presence of bruxism. When treating bruxism and/or TMJ disorder, Dr. Keller often recommends a custom-designed oral appliance that can protect your teeth from grinding, or hold your jaw in a more comfortable position to ease tension on your jaw’s temporomandibular joints (TMJs).
Custom-Made Mouthguards
Mouthguards can serve a slew of purposes, from protecting your teeth while playing sports to helping your bite regain its proper function. In the case of bruxism, your dental appliance will be specially designed to protect your teeth from the friction and pressure of grinding, but will remain comfortable enough for you to sleep soundly through the night.
For patients with mild to moderate TMJ disorder, a strategically-designed mouthguard can help keep your lower jaw in proper position. Being able to rest comfortably will ease the stress placed on your jaw’s joints, alleviating the pain and discomfort associated with TMJ disorder.
